Support / Voice / Phone / Mitel

Configure Mitel 6900 series for VoiceTel.

Mitel 6920, 6930, 6940, and 6970 (and the older Aastra-branded 67xxi) phones can run either MiNet or SIP firmware. SIP firmware is what you want for VoiceTel.

Confirm SIP firmware

Press Settings → Status → Phone Info. The firmware version should be SIP- prefixed (e.g. 5.2.0.10000 with the SIP load). If it shows MiNet-, convert to SIP firmware first via Mitel's downloads area.

Web UI configuration

  1. Find the IP address: Settings → Status → Network → IP Address.
  2. Open http://<phone-ip>. Sign in (default admin / 22222 — change immediately).
  3. Open Advanced Settings → Account Configuration → Line 1.
  4. Set:
    • Line Mode: Generic
    • Screen Name: caller's name
    • Phone Number: SIP username from VoiceTel onboarding
    • Caller ID: caller's name
    • Authentication Name: SIP username
    • Password: SIP password
  5. Open Advanced Settings → Network → SIP Server:
    • Configuration Server: the SIP server host shown in your customer portal (port 5060)
    • Backup Server: a backup VoiceTel host if your onboarding email lists one
    • Outbound Proxy: same as Configuration Server
    • Registration Period: 360
    • Transport: UDP
  6. Open Advanced Settings → Audio → Audio Codecs. Arrange PCMU and PCMA at the top of the list.
  7. Click Save Settings. The phone restarts the SIP stack and registers.

NAT & keepalive

Open Advanced Settings → Network → NAT Settings:

  • NAT Refresh Interval: 30 seconds
  • NAT Type: Static (or set Public IP if the phone has a public IP)

Auto-provisioning

Mitel SIP firmware fetches aastra.cfg (global) and <mac>.cfg (per-phone) at boot via TFTP, FTP, HTTP, or HTTPS. Configure Advanced Settings → Configuration Server → Download Protocol to point at your provisioning server. Contact VoiceTel engineering for a Mitel aastra.cfg template.
